MUD GUTS AND GLORY!
Right, listen carefully. If you thought off-roading was bundu-bashing to your cousin's bush braai in a 2006 Fortuner with a towbar and an attitude, you’re in for a rude awakening. Because the inaugural South African Safari Rally (SASR) is here, and it’s about to chew up competitors, spit them out, and then run over them again for good measure. Repeatedly. On purpose.
Basecamp? Sun City. Yes, that oddly luxurious mirage in the middle of the North West Province where golf carts outnumber actual lions. But from there, things go full Mad Max faster than you can say “where’s my torque wrench?”
This isn’t some polite jaunt through a game reserve. No. This is part of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), which is essentially motorsport’s answer to throwing yourself into a blender while shouting “YOLO!” And this time, the blender has been preheated to 35°C and lined with thorns.
The Recce: AKA ‘How to Ruin a Holiday in 4,270km’
To plan this madness, route director Evan Hutchison and his merry band of tyre-abusing masochists set off in March in two Toyota Hilux 4x4s. They covered 4,270km of terrain so unfriendly it makes your in-laws seem charming. Rocks, rivers, thick bush, and zero sympathy from the environment.
The good news? The Hiluxes survived. Of course they did. This is Africa, and the Hilux is basically our national cockroach – you can’t kill it. Not even with corrugations, dongas, or a cow that doesn’t feel like moving.
The real hero, though? The Falken WildPeak M/T tyres, which managed a staggering 8,540km of combined abuse with zero punctures. ZERO. That’s like going through a mosh pit wearing a white T-shirt and coming out with it still clean. Witchcraft.
So, What Can Competitors Expect?
Pain. But scenic pain.
From 18 to 24 May 2025, local and international drivers, riders, navigators and masochists will wrestle their machines across the North West. Starting with a Prologue on Monday 19 May, they’ll tackle five brutal stages through terrain so rugged it looks like it was designed by a vengeful geology student.
Hutchison promises thick bush, treacherous riverbeds, and rocks arranged in such a way that your suspension will cry itself to sleep at night. Oh, and if it rains again? Mud. Not the fun, Instagrammable kind either. The kind that eats vehicles for breakfast and your dignity for lunch.
So Why Do This?
Because rally-raid isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s for the lunatics who look at a 400km rock-infested wasteland and say, “You know what would improve this? Speed.”
And South Africa, in true overachieving fashion, has thrown down a route so brutal, even the Dakar guys are whispering “sterkte, bru.”
Entry Info – You Crazy Enough?
The closing date is 30 April 2025. After that, you’re either in or you’re home watching people on Instagram pretending they didn’t cry in Stage 3. Your call.
Final Thought:
Toyota Gazoo Racing, ASO, and the SASR team haven’t just built a rally. They’ve built a test of grit, gears, and gastrointestinal fortitude. If you survive it, you won’t just be tough. You’ll be South African tough – which is basically Chuck Norris, but with a sunburn.
