Suzuki Auto South Africa is taking to the field with a brand-new initiative aimed at nurturing future rugby stars, partnering with the Humanitarian Empowerment Fund (HEF) to launch a grassroots development programme across four primary schools in Gauteng’s West Rand.

Kicking off in April and running until December, this nine-month pilot project will train and mentor young talent in Rugby Sevens, providing them not only with sporting skills but also essential life guidance. Participating schools include Newclare Primary, Everest Primary, Dowling Primary, and Claremont Primary.

“Sport has always been close to Suzuki’s heart,” says Brendon Carpenter, Brand Marketing Manager at Suzuki Auto SA. “While we’re proud of our involvement with the Griquas and top-tier rugby, we also recognise how crucial it is to invest in the next generation of players.”

To support the programme’s logistical needs, Suzuki has supplied two seven-seater Ertiga MPVs — a practical and economical transport solution for both players and equipment. Powered by a 1.5L petrol engine with a choice of manual or automatic transmission, the Ertiga’s flexible seating and cargo space make it a fitting choice for the initiative.

The HEF will oversee coaching appointments and ensure participating learners are provided meals before training. The programme will also feature two tournaments under the Suzuki Sevens Development banner, giving young athletes a platform to showcase their talent and fostering a competitive but supportive environment.

Beyond rugby skills, the initiative is designed to promote health, discipline, and teamwork — qualities that extend far beyond the playing field. If successful, the programme may expand to additional schools in the region.

HEF founder and director Clete Stevis is optimistic about the partnership’s potential: “I believe this programme will help uncover a new generation of Springboks. Suzuki’s involvement brings credibility, resources, and passion to the project.”

This isn’t Suzuki’s first foray into community sports. Since 2022, the company has supported Thembisa’s Imvuselelo Sporting Organisation, helping to keep youths engaged through soccer by funding prizes, covering referee costs, and maintaining facilities.

With sport as its platform and empowerment as its goal, Suzuki’s latest initiative is a strong drive towards a better future — on and off the field.
