The JAECOO J7 SHS is Gunning for Both
If Chuck Norris and a crash test dummy had a baby, it would be the JAECOO J7 SHS. And no, that’s not the sound your geyser makes before exploding—it’s JAECOO’s plug-in hybrid SUV that just body-slammed the Euro NCAP crash safety tests and walked away with a smug little five-star rating.
That’s right. Five. Not one for each door, although yes, there are doors. This is a family car that can hit 255 kW and still tuck your toddler in with a 23.5 out of 24 score in child crash protection. Basically, your offspring are safer in this thing than in your arms.
Let’s break it down:
- 81% for adult occupants (so you won’t have to explain to your boss why your hairline now starts at the back of your head after a fender bender),
- 80% for kids (which is one naughty tantrum shy of perfection),
- 80% for vulnerable road users (cyclists and e-scooter riders, sleep easy),
- and 80% for safety assists (read: it might know you're distracted before your wife does).
Now, let’s talk power—because while this J7 SHS may be a family-friendly marshmallow inside, it’s a muscle-flexing hybrid monster under the hood. With 255 kW and a torque figure that sounds like a bodybuilder’s daily protein intake (525 N.m), it’s got the kind of pull that’ll make a caravan rethink its life choices.
That power comes courtesy of a 1.5 TGDI Dedicated Hybrid Engine paired with something called a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, which probably means it doesn't take weekends off. And while most hybrids give you a bit of battery boost for your trip to the shops, the J7 SHS managed to stretch its legs from Cape Town to Gqeberha and sipped only 4.88 L/100km on average. That’s coffee-budget levels of fuel usage.
Oh, and just to flex even harder, it pulled off 1,453.9 km on a single tank somewhere in South America, probably while carrying smug engineers and a crate of self-confidence.
JAECOO says this is part of their global mission to push the boundaries of electrification and safety. Which is great, because for a long time, Chinese cars were about as trusted as gas station sushi. But this one? This one’s showing up in crash tests, press releases, and—soon—your driveway.
So, is the JAECOO J7 SHS the hybrid hero South Africa needs?
Absolutely. It’s safe enough to make your mother-in-law approve, powerful enough to make your brother-in-law jealous, and clever enough to survive your kids.
